Which  Way?

In order to obtain an optimum state of being there are four systems available to man to help him face the problems of life and to rid himself of the negative qualities which he experiences within himself.   They are:

Religion,  Psychiatry,  Scientology, Surat Shabd Yoga.

1.    Religion consists of believing the writings of past masters and mystics.   The guide for this system is the minister, priest, rabbi, mullah or imamIt consists of rites and ceremonies which the believer follows, usually mechanically, without any true understanding of the tenets or teachings of the founder of the religion.  It requires blind belief which leads to sectarianism and conflict among peoples of different faiths. It is questionable whether one can obtain an optimum state of being following a religion. Religious wars are proof of their ineffectiveness  The minister, priest, rabbi or mullah lives off of donations.  People for whom blind belief and religion is insufficient often leave their religion and turn to other means for their development.

2.   Psychiatry uses a method of self analysis with the psychiatrist as the guide.  Attempts are made to bring into conscious awareness the impressions and memories of events which exist in the unconscious part of the mind, and which affect a person’s behavior and emotional life.   It is an expensive and lengthy process which psychiatry often tries to speed up by using drugs and electric shock.  The results are questionable and may have unintended consequences such as dependence upon drugs and depressions that may lead to suicide.  It has a completely materialistic concept of the human being.

3.    Scientology is a system that started out as a therapy for  disturbed individuals and which has in the course of time developed into a religious philosophy.  It recognizes the fact that forgotten memories of events affect the emotions and behavior of an individual.  These memories are at a cellural level and in what Scientology calls the reactive mind.  With the Auditor as the guide Scientology attempts to lead the subject along a Time Track into the past in order to bring these hidden, embedded memories, called engrams,  into conscious awareness so that they may be erased, eliminated or cleared.  Unlike Psychiatry it does not use drugs or electric shock.  To reach advanced states of being is a lengthy process and extremely expensive.

4.    Surat Shabd Yoga has a perfect living master as the guide.  It uses a method of attaching the mind and soul to a power that is already within the individual and which is mentioned in all religious scriptures.  This power has been called by different names at different times in history.  It is the creative power mentioned in the Bible as the Word.  Contact with this Power or Word under the directions of a perfect living master burns away and nullifies the impressions of previous lives referred to as karmas, sanskaras or engrams.  This system is the divine design placed within every human being as a means to become consciously aware of one’s true self.   Since it is a way of life there are certain restrictions which a follower must adhere to.

Meditation under the guidance of a perfect living master is similar to a session with a psychiatrist or an auditor of Scientology.  The psychiatrist or auditor, however, is within.  Every time the student sits for meditation, impressions of the past, whether they be called engrams, subconscious memories, or karmas of previous lives are erased.  An optimum state of being is eventually achieved.  Since it is the Creator’s design and is within man, there is no charge for the services of the perfect, living master.

SCIENTOLOGY –Where do we go from here?

                           L. Ron Hubbard’s Search for Truth.

Taken from biographical section  ABOUT THE AUTHOR  p. 529 Dianetics

“Traveling extensively throughout Asia and the Pacific, he studied the wisdom of Far Eastern philosophies yet observed widespread suffering and poverty.  If there was such profound wisdom in the East then why all this, he asked.”

This is a question that is posed by many.  A similar question is, “Since living, perfect masters have been coming to this world at all times, why has the world not improved?

The answer is that the world has not improved because they do not come to improve the world; they come to take one out of this level of creation into a higher one.

“Despite all of mankind’s advances in the physical sciences, a workable technology of the mind and life had never been developed.  The mental “technologies” which did exist, psychology and psychiatry, were actually barbaric, false subjects---no more workable than the methods of jungle witch doctors.”

“Ron set out to find the basic principle of existence—a principle which would lead to the unification of knowledge and that would explain the meaning of existence itself---something other philosophers had attempted but never found.”

This, of course, is not correct for the truth of man’s existence and his purpose on earth has always been known.  Ron may have studied yoga in India but did not  come across a perfect, living master who could explain experientially the meaning and goal of life itself.

Ron’s work helping deeply disturbed inmates in a Savannah, Georgia mental hospital is admirable.  His experiences led him to a certain understanding of the mind and to develop a technology of treating mental patients.  He made the most important discovery well known to all perfect living masters and their disciples.  It was the self.

“The discovery of what it was that the mind was coating was the discovery of Scientology.  It was coating a thetan.  A thetan is the person himself, --not his body or his name, the physical universe, his mind, or anything else; that which is aware of being aware, the identity which IS the individual.  The thetan is most familiar to one and all as you.”  P. 533

Ron’s biography goes on to state “These discoveries formed the basis of the applied religious philosophy of Scientology, the study of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life.”

THE HISTORY OF DIANETICS

The history of Dianetics would be the history of a voyage of discovery, of an exploration into new and nearly uncharted  realms, terra incognita, the human mind, a land which lies in inch behind your forehead.

And what of L.Ron Hubbard and his researches into the mind?  As many know, he did not stop his work after Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health……When someone was looking at mental image picture in the mind, who exactly was looking at that picture?  His continuing research led him to a startling conclusion: Man was neither his body nor his mind, but a spiritual being.  One doesn’t have a soul or spirit, he concluded, one is a spirit.   . And this life force was the source of all that is good, decent, creative and beautiful in the world, the individual being himself.

“We constantly think and talk of our minds as if it belonged to us; but the truth of the matter is that in 99,9 % cases we are under the grip of the mind.  We discover this painful fact when we are advised to do something which the mind does not accept and the struggle begins.  The supreme mystery lies within us but the mind rebels and refuses to go in or does so only for short while because it is accustomed to enjoy the phenomenal sensual world.”    Charan Singh  letter 7-30-54

Thus, moving into the field traditionally belonging to religion—the realm of the spirit or human soul.---Mr. Hubbard founded the religion of Scientology.  The word comes from the Latin scio (know) and the Greek logos*, which implies that word or outward form by which the inward thought is expressed and made known.  Thus Scientology means knowing about knowing.”  p. 524

*The logos, according to Greek philosophy, is the source of world order and intelligibility, the self-revealing thought and will of God.  As set forth in the Gospel of John, the Word created the universe, sustains it and is the life and light of men.  This creative power has been given different names according to the time, place and language such as, Shabd, Sound Current, Nam, Akash Bani, ‘heavenly uatterance’ Audible Life Stream, Ism-i-azam, Kalam-i-ilahi.

L. Ron Hubbard’s search and experience brought him to the essence.  “Man is a spiritual being”.  His life force was the source of all that is good, decent, creative and beautiful.

This realization of Hubbard is not new, however.  It was expressed in the ancient Upanishads.  “All that exists is ONE, Thou art That.!”

Hubbard says that  ”the mind was coating” something and that something was the spirit, the real person, the self which he calls thetan.  The one who was watching.  “When someone in Dianetcs was looking at a mental image picture in the mind, who exactly was looking at that picture?”  p 524

It is a fundamental truth that the self is not the mind, nor the body, nor the senses, but something completely separate.  The problem is that the thetan or self is coated, or covered over by mind and matter.  Once this is realized, the question arises, how does one separate this thetan from its coatings? ‘What is the source of this spirit or thetan and how can it know its self or origin?’.

In the Preface to the First Edition of The Path of the Masters Dr. Johnson writes about the self,

“NO PROBLEM OF GREATER or of more moving import confronts man than that of possible awareness of his own consciousness, the deep significance of the place he occupies in the world as a whole, and of the purpose he should first discover and then pursue.”  He  then quotes Lavell.

“The consciousness of Self is the primal metaphysical experience, which, whilst causing one to penetrate into one’s innermost being, at the same time causes one to penetrate into the universe.  We cannot behold this universe as we could some spectacle before our eyes, for we ourselves are part of it; we aid in its formation; we are—as it were—fellow actors in a kind of drama, the variations of which depend on our subjective life which expresses its manifold incidents.  Our affective states are not to be considered as mere accidents, of interest to no one but ourselves, to which the universe remains impassive, for thereby we penetrate into its intimacy and participate in the innermost working of its life and gain the revelation of its mystery.”

Dianetcs and psychology admit that there is a vast unconscious realm of mind which is referred to as the subconscious.  This subconscious mind contains recordings of everything that has happened and affects our life.  These recordings have been called sanskaras or past karmas by Hindu psychology.  These impressions from previous births are in the mind and have predetermined our destiny in this life.   Dianetics calls these subconscious memories or impressions “engrams”.

Psychiatry uses the technique of free association and discussion with a psychiatrist in an attempto bring these memories into consciousness awareness.

Dianetics uses a technique of returning on a “time track” to a period in the past when the engram was formed.  Its object is to have the subject re-experience the painful incident so that its hold upon the individual can be neutralized.

Since these impressions, karmas of engrams originate within the real of mind, a true spiritual path eliminates these impressions or engrams by taking the soul or thetan to a spiritual realm completely above and beyond the mind.  Hindus call this region Par Brahm. (beyond Brahm—the creator of the Three Worlds.)

When the soul or thetan reaches this stage of development, the power which these engrams, karmas, sanskaras have over the individual is neutralized and the liberated soul or thetan becomes master of his mind and senses.

“In one form or another, all great religions have held the hope of spiritual freedom — a condition free of material limitations and misery. The question has always been, however, how does one reach such a state, particularly while still living amidst a frantic and often overwhelming society?

Although modern life seems to pose an infinitely complex array of problems, Scientology maintains that the solutions to those problems are basically simple and within every man’s reach.  Difficulties with communication and interpersonal relationships, nagging insecurities, self-doubt and despair — each man innately possesses the potential to be free of these and many other concerns.  Scientology offers a pathway to greater freedom. “

                             From the Scientology web site

‘The goals of Scientology predate all ideas of “therapy” and are found first in religion and philosophy as long as 10,000 yeas ago. “

“The question has always been, however, how does one reach such a state, particularly while still living amidst a frantic and often overwhelming society?”

from The Grades of Release by L. Ron Hubbard

Matthew 11:27    All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the father save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Without finding a perfect, living master it is not possible for the Thetan to cross the bridge and know himself and his creator.  And one finds a perfect, living master only by the grace of God.   It is not possible to find the perfect living master for the master lives like an ordinary human being and must give his own recognition.  The master himself will seek the disciple.  When the chela (pupil) is ready, the Guru appears.

According to the masters of Surat Shabd Yoga this is accomplished by means of attaching the soul and mind to the Word or Audible Life Stream which comes from a region above the mind.  It is the power that has created the universe and is found within man.   Surat Shabd Yoga means the Union of the Soul with the Sound.   One of the most beautiful explanations of the path of the masters is found in the Gospel of John. One can also refer to the writings of mystics like Kabir, Guru Nanak of the Sikhs and the various mystics of Islam such as Maulana Rum (Rumi), Sultan Bahu and Bulleh Shah.

Living Perfect Masters have been coming to this earth in all generations to revive the spiritual message that man is a spiritual being, that he is eternal and that he is not part of the mind and senses, ot use Ron’s terminology “a thetan”.

Religions contain the testimony of past, perfect masters.   The fault is that they lack a living, perfect master to lead, guide and protect the disciple on the inner journey of self discovery.
